What Is a Well Visit?
An important part of preventive care for your child. A baby should have well-baby visits a few days after being home from the hospital, and then at 1 month, 2 months, 4 months, 6 months, and 9 months. Toddlers have well visits every six months, and as they grow into school age, your child should see their pediatrician at least annually for a physical exam.
At each well visit, your child receives a comprehensive physical exam. The pediatrician:
- Examines musculoskeletal health
- Records height and weight
- Checks vital signs
- Tests reflexes
- Performs vision and hearing screenings if needed
Well visits also ensure your child is up-to-date on all recommended vaccinations. The AAP has a published schedule for children’s vaccinations from birth to the age of two, with additional doses of some vaccines into adolescence.
Why Are Well Visits Important?
Tracking your child's growth and development helps you and your pediatrician see that they are hitting developmental milestones and growing as they should. Regular exams help with early detection of disease, which allows for early intervention and better patient outcomes. You should also use the time with your pediatrician to ask us questions about your child's health, growth, or behavior.
When you keep regularly scheduled appointments for well visits, your child receives all recommended vaccines on schedule. Vaccines protect your child from serious illnesses like the flu, measles, and pneumonia. You may need a certificate of immunization to enroll your child in school or activities.
